A Must Read on new tobacco tax

Please note the PipesMagazine logo above. You need to click on that logo and go to the magazine.

Bob Tate has written a piece that all pipe smokers must, must, read.

Steve Cohen, U.S. Representative from Tennessee, has introduced a bill, along with his buddy Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a ridiculous bill that will increase pipe tobacco taxes to the same as they are for Roll Your Own cigarette tobacco, which amounts to $24.78US per pound.

You read that right. Under the Cohen bill, taxes on pipe tobacco will rise from $2.83 per pound to practically $25 per pound.

Those of us who live in Tennessee recognize Steve Cohen. He is from Memphis, a lawyer, and not a very good one, who pushed through the state’s lottery bill, supposedly for education.

I will have more on Cohen’s legislative record in a future post.

But for now, go to PipesMagazine.com and read and heed.

Times, they are a-changing, and not for the better.

I knew something like this would happen once they renamed RYO cigarette tobacco to pipe tobacco. The cigarette smokers are doing it to us again. (insert expletive here)

Thanks for linking that up Fred! You have not heard the last of this from PipesMagazine.com.

We are just getting warmed up.

This bill must not pass, and we are going to make sure it doesn’t.

    Just watch. More to come.

These taxes are way out of hand and we need to start fighting back. I mean collectively fighting back, not just a portion of us.
We at PipesMagazine are getting the ball rolling on this and are going to fight this.
There will be more to come in the following days.

Nelson, I respectively disagree with you. It is not the cigarette smokers, it is the politicians that are doing it.

We must ALL ban together as TOBACCO users.

I agree with you Bob (as far as the politicians go) but when your plane is going down in flames and you’re leaking fuel, you don’t light a match. Tell me the RYO people were thinking of pipe and cigar smokers when they pulled this stunt. Sorry, I believe in freedom for all but when my freedom is being threatened by addiction I start to think differently.

We’re like the good kids that are getting punished with the bad kids just because we were there when something happened.

I hate to be a pessimist (but I am) but our plane is not far from the ground.

If it were to be done the right way, which it won’t, the tax on RYO should be REDUCED to the same rate as pipe tobacco. The $24.78 per pound tax on RYO is ludicrous and displays the total ignorance of those supporting that tax rate.
